3D LED advertising screens in Vietnam: how the «pop-out» effect works and where to find it
The image that seems to step out of the screen is a perspective technique on a corner screen, no 3D glasses needed. How the effect works, the 3D screens that have run in Hà Nội and Hồ Chí Minh City, and what to prepare.
The «pop-out» effect without glasses
Ads in which a car, an animal or a bottle seems to burst out of a building are usually called «3D LED». The screen is still flat; the effect comes from forced (anamorphic) perspective:
- The screen wraps around the corner of a building, its two faces at right angles.
- The image is built for one main viewpoint — usually the middle of the junction in front. From there the two faces join into one space with depth.
- Frames, shadows and objects that «cross» the frame trick the eye into seeing the image come forward.
So the same video is striking from the right spot and distorted from the side. A good 3D screen is a corner screen at a busy junction, where most viewers look from roughly the same direction.
3D screens that have run
The videos below were recorded by SJK (formerly Shojiki) at screens that have run 3D ads:
- Tràng Tiền Plaza, Hà Nội — a VPBank ad (the video at the top).
- Phạm Ngọc Thạch – Điện Biên Phủ junction, Hồ Chí Minh City — a VinFast ad, a Viettel 3D commercial, the screen as a whole.
- Nguyễn Huệ walking street, Hồ Chí Minh City — 3D LED screen.
The Viettel example shows something useful: a commercial made in 3D style can still run on a flat single-face screen — a lighter effect, but a cheaper screen.
Preparing the content
- Ask the screen owner for the technical drawing: the size of each face, resolution, the angle of the corner, the main viewpoint. 3D content has to be built for each screen.
- Short and one idea: 10–15 seconds, one main object, a clear «step-out» moment; the brand before and after the effect.
- No sound needed: outdoor screens may not use sound (Article 28 of the Advertising Law, as amended by Law No. 75/2025/QH15, in force from 01/01/2026); their light must not affect road safety — avoid strong, constant flashing.
- Film it: a 3D effect lives on in social media; film from the main viewpoint to have a video to share.
